history
Not all love stories involve moonlight, roses, and pretty words. In fact, sometimes the strongest relationships are the ones with the least auspicious beginnings. Indeed, finding true love certainly wasn't on the agenda when Abraham Lucas and Skye Ahlquist met in the autumn of 1985.

Abraham, called "Ace" since childhood, was a young naval Lieutenant stationed at NAS Pax River, a skilled test pilot with an eye on the space program. Skye was a senior at Georgetown, bartending her way through a B.S. in Nursing. It was a Friday night in late April when Ace, on weekend leave with his buddies, strolled through the door of an unassuming D.C. bar – the very bar at which Skye mixed drinks four nights a week. Skye, thrilled to have finished her last final just that afternoon, had decided to stay after her shift – one celebratory drink before a much needed weekend off. The two met in that dim, smoky bar and, fueled by mutual attraction and one too many SoCokes, ended up spending the night together.

One drunken night turned into thirty-six hours of blissful discovery. Neither slept much that weekend; they were far too enthralled by each other to waste a moment of their time together. By the time Sunday night rolled around, Ace and Skye found themselves completely - and unexpectedly - in love.

A month later, Skye discovered she was pregnant. A baby hadn't been part of the plan for either of them (not for some time, anyway), but it seemed that Fate had different plans. They were married in short order, and Skye joined Ace at the Patuxent River base.

The newlyweds prepared as best they could, eagerly awaiting the baby’s arrival. By the time Cecilia was born in July, Ace and Skye had managed to transform their modest house into a comfortable, baby-proof home.

Two months after Cecilia's first birthday, Ace decided to leave the Navy. He’d managed to avoid deployment during his eight years of service, but the middle east was a hotspot even then, and the possibility of having to leave his wife and young daughter was a constant fear. Although the recent Challenger disaster had made him rethink his boyhood dream of becoming an astronaut, it did give him direction as a civilian. In 1988, with the whole-hearted support of Skye, Ace began to pursue his Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering.

They had some lean times, even with Skye working extra shifts at the hospital, but they always managed to get by. In 1990, Samson was born, followed by Roxanne in 1992. Shortly after Roxy was born, Ace completed his doctorate and accepted a position at a aerospace development/testing facility near Olympia Heights.

Named after the dawn (she was born at daybreak), Roxy was a fair-haired, rosy-cheeked child with a ready smile and an infectious laugh. Happy and outgoing, with an active imagination and energy to spare, she and her siblings had an idyllic childhood. Their large, restored farmhouse (complete with a large backyard and a tire swing) wasn't the fanciest or most luxurious in Olympia Heights, but it was full of love and laughter. Life was - and is - good.

personality
There's not much to dislike about Roxy Lucas. She's friendly, energetic, generous, and playful (sometimes to the point of being silly). She enjoys a good party as much as the next girl, and genuinely enjoys the company of most people. There are, naturally, a few people she could do without (as well as those who could do without her), but even those individuals are few and far between.

It's fitting that Roxy was born at daybreak, for she truly is a morning person. She always wakes up in time to see the sunrise. Her days are very predictable in that sense (and only in that sense), but she doesn’t mind. If she sleeps in at all, her whole day feels off-kilter.

With the exception of math (and physics, which she hasn't gotten around to taking just yet), Roxy's not the greatest student. She'd much rather dance or sing (or flirt or shop or pretty much anything else) than read a school book, and it's rather like pulling teeth to get her to write a paper. At this point in her life, school - at least outside of the math classroom - is simply another social setting.

Roxy is unabashedly boy-crazy. She becomes infatuated very easily, but has yet to fall in love. Her romantic, sexually precocious nature often clouds her better judgment, and she doesn't always make the right decisions about which boys to date. At fifteen, she's had numerous boyfriends, but none of her relationships have lasted more than a few weeks.
