Horatio was the youngest of three children born to Marcus Belby and his muggle wife, Sarah (read more about Marcus and Sarah here). Growing up, Horatio was always closer with Izzy. They were two peas in a pod, always laughing and playing games with the neighborhood kids while Bryan, the middle child, preferred to spend his days in the library.

All three children were sent to a prestigious boarding school, where Horatio quickly found his place near the top of the school’s social hierarchy.

None of the siblings showed much in the way of magical abilities growing up, so it came as a bit of a shock when Bryan received his Hogwarts letter. It was less of a shock when Horatio received his a year later. The arrival of Bryan’s letter (and therefore, a new opportunity) seemed to ‘awaken’ the magic that had been lying dormant in Horatio.

Horatio was thrilled to go to Hogwarts and quickly grew accustomed to life in the wizarding world. He was sorted into Hufflepuff house and, as at the previous school, climbed the social ladder in no time at all. He hasn’t shown a great amount of talent in any of the academic subjects offered at Hogwarts, but he is dynamite on the Quidditch pitch. He was made Keeper during his third year, and has retained that position ever since. This year will be his first as captain of the house team.

He and Izzy are still very close, and they write each other every week, without fail.

personality
Although Horatio was born less than fourteen months after Bryan (who, in turn, was born just sixteen months after Izzy), he is, and will always be, the baby of the family. From day one, he was a winsome, active child with a ready smile and flair for rhetoric that let him get away with far more than he should have.

Things haven’t changed much over the last sixteen years.

Athletic, outgoing, and gregarious, Horatio and his older brother Bryan are as different as night and day. In fact, based on looks and personality alone, most people would never connect the two as being related at all, let alone siblings. Where Bryan’s wit tends to be dry and sarcastic, Horatio’s is jocular and accessible. He shares very little of his brother’s love of books and learning and is, in fact, a rather terrible student. Not to say that he’s unintelligent, but he really doesn’t see the point in schoolwork when he knows that he’ll be playing professional Quidditch as soon as he leaves Hogwarts.

What he lacks in the book-smarts department, however, he more than makes up with general cleverness and social skills. He’s extremely popular, friendly to just about everyone (unless he has a reason not to be), and an incorrigible flirt – the Don Juan of Hufflepuff house.

He has a talent for pulling pranks, particularly on big brother Bryan (these are generally pretty harmless, though; they may not be exceptionally close, but they are brothers, after all. Horatio would never do anything that bad.)

Horatio is far from perfect, of course. His self-confidence sometimes crosses the line into cockiness, and he can be downright pouty when he doesn’t get his way. He also tends to have a short attention span when it comes to the ladies. He loves the chase, and will be incredibly attentive and romantic during the wooing process, but he gets bored quickly once he actually ‘has’ the girl. His love life thus far has been a string of hot but meaningless affairs.

POSITIVE
Talents: Quidditch, flying, football, rolling with the punches, flirting, snogging, cooking, storytelling.

Flaws: Most things academic (although he’s moderately talented in Charms and Herbology).
