history
Oliver Wood was recruited right out of Hogwarts for the Puddlemere United Quidditch club, where he spent two years as a reserve Keeper before being bumped up to a starting position. Katie Bell took a year off from Quidditch at the height of the second war, but eventually was drawn back to the sport, her great passion, and became a reserve chaser for the Ballycastle Bats. Her big break came in the year 2000, when she was called in to substitute for an injured starter. Several ministry bigwigs were impressed with her performance, and she was offered a position on the English team for the 2002 World Cup. Oliver Wood had also been recruited for the national team, and the two quickly rekindled the friendship they’d shared as students and teammates. However, this time was different: they fell in love.
On August 17th, 2002, the Quidditch fans, along with much of the wizarding world, were delighted to witness the engagement of the two Quidditch darlings at the final match against Germany. England won the Cup (by 240 points), and Oliver proposed to Katie right then and there, on the field, amidst the wild celebrating. The two were married by Christmas. Kate was offered a Chaser position with Puddlemere, and for the next seventeen years, the Woods were the golden couple of professional Quidditch. The Woods decided to retire in 2019, but they are still active in the sports world. Katie currently works as a spokesperson for the Department of Magical Games and Sports, and Oliver has a top-rated sports talk show on the WWN.
August and Juniper were born during the height of their parents’ professional careers, and therefore spent much of their young lives traveling the Quidditch circuit. As much as Oliver and Katie tried to keep their children out of the spotlight, there was only so much they could do. After all, their births had been headline news.
At Hogwarts, at least, the siblings have been able to live relatively ordinary lives. They both play for their house teams (naturally), but only Juniper has shown interest in pursuing a professional Quidditch career. August is much more interested in academia (especially arcane subjects), and prefers rare books and magical artifacts to bludgers and quaffles.
personality
Sometimes, the Sorting Hat has a difficult time deciding where to place a new student. Not so with August Wood. Young August was destined to become a Ravenclaw from the day he was born, even if everyone else in his family proudly sported the red and gold of Gryffindor.
August truly flourished in Ravenclaw, finding his niche among like-minded peers. Exceptionally bright and witty, August isn’t interested in just Learning. He wants to know everything about everything – especially the obscure. His personal library (usually piled up in haphazard stacks around his bed) is extensive and eclectic, including everything from graphic novels to Most Potente Potions to the I Ching, and he’s become quite adept at sneaking into the Restricted Section of the school library, as well.
While August is generally brilliant at most things academic or magical, his pet obsessions are magical history, languages and artifacts. His ideal job would be a sort of wizarding Indiana Jones (he saw the old movies at a muggleborn friend’s house during the summer between second and third years, and was completely hooked), combining the academic with adventure. His dream is to open a wizarding museum full of ancient artifacts (obtained by him, of course), texts, and other miscellanea - something that would be open to the public. He soaks up knowledge like a sponge, but he doesn’t hoard it. He feels that it should be accessible to everyone.
Academically-speaking, August is a total geek. Socially, though, he’s alright. He’s friendly and outgoing, but doesn’t necessarily feel the need to be part of the ‘in’ crowd. He’s more than happy with his smallish-but-close group of friends, including his best friend (and likely the one person who is actually geekier than he is), Bryan Belby.
miscellaneous
TALENTS: Possesses a wealth of useless (and useful) knowledge, can speak a number of languages (although only six fluently), decent Beater.
Personality Strengths: Witty, intelligent, adventurous, friendly.
FLAWS: Suffers from insomnia, terrible penmanship, often neglects to do his homework (because he’s got better things to study).
Personality Flaws: Stubborn, obsesses over random things, gets extremely cranky when hungry, has a penchant for off-colour jokes and remarks.
ASTROLOGICAL SIGN: Scorpio
Scorpio is the eighth house of the Zodiac and governs the genitalia. Positive traits include magnetic charisma, ambition, drive, a penetrating mind, curiosity, intensity of focus, emotional depth, consistency, persistence, willpower, and the potential for inner transformation and regeneration; negative traits include selfishness, obsessiveness, vindictiveness, hypersensitivity, ruthlessness, cynicism, an inability to understand the word "moderation," and jealousy. It is said that Scorpios embody both the best and the worst of all that are born under the stars, and that there are three kinds of Scorpios: wicked scorpions, cunning serpents, and saintly eagles. What each Scorpio becomes is entirely up to that Scorpio.
Curiosity killed the cat; satisfaction brought it back. If ever a wizard exhibited a danger of self destruction from too much knowledge, surely it was a Ravenclaw Scorpio. It doesn't matter whether the pet obsession this week is botany, Muggle pop music, or the history of the Necronomicon, if a Ravenclaw Scorpio wants to know about it, then he will, and damn the consequences: full speed ahead. Indeed, just mention that a subject is "forbidden" and you'll see a peculiar light shine in their eyes. They sneak into locked rooms after dark, and forge passes to the restricted library sections. The lust for arcane knowledge is both the greatest strength of these wizards, and the Achilles heel. It's best to indulge them whenever possible and let the obsession burn itself out; and, when this is not possible, to explain in great detail and absolutely *no* patronizing why the subject must not be explored. These Ravenclaws are quiet and secretive, but don't be fooled by that calm and placid exterior; they have hidden depths.
